Medetomidine hydrochloride is an agonist of RECEPTORS, It is the racemate of DEXMEDETOMIDINE. Medetomidine is used as both a surgical anesthetic and analgesic. It is often used as the hydrochloride salt, medetomidine hydrochloride, a crystalline white solid. It is an α2 adrenergic agonist that can be administered as an intravenous drug solution with sterile water.

Medetomidine hydrochloride is often used in combinations as premedication (before a general anaesthetic) in healthy cats and dogs.
2. In Marine paint
Medetomidine hydrochloride can be used as an antifouling substance in marine paint.

 

The corresponding pharmacological effects are produced by acting on the α2 receptors of the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system.  Medetomidine produces sedative and hypnotic effects by acting on the α2 receptors of the locus coeruleus and stimulating the endogenous sleep-promoting pathway, allowing the patient to maintain a natural non-rapid eye movement stage III sleep state.

The characteristics of this sedative and hypnotic state are that the patient can be awakened by stimulation or language, and no respiratory depression will occur during the sedative and hypnotic process.
