Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analog that is primarily used in medical practice for its uterotonic, gastric protective, and abortifacient properties. It acts by stimulating uterine contractions and inhibiting gastric acid secretion.
Obstetrics and Gynecology: Misoprostol is commonly used to induce labor, manage postpartum hemorrhage, and terminate early pregnancies.
Gastroenterology: It is also prescribed to treat and prevent ulcers in patients taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and to reduce the risk of gastric bleeding in patients with peptic ulcer disease.
Uterotonic Effect: Misoprostol stimulates uterine contractions, making it useful for inducing labor and managing postpartum hemorrhage by promoting the contraction of uterine muscles and reducing bleeding.
Gastric Protective Effect: By inhibiting gastric acid secretion and increasing mucus production in the stomach, misoprostol protects the gastric mucosa from damage caused by acid and other irritants, thus preventing and treating ulcers.
Abortifacient Effect: In early pregnancies, misoprostol can cause the uterus to expel the pregnancy tissue, making it an effective option for medical abortion.
