Macitentan is an orally active, potent, and selective endothelin receptor antagonist (ERA) with high affinity for both endothelin A (ETA) and endothelin B (ETB) receptors. It belongs to a class of medications known as ERAs, which are designed to block the actions of the endothelin hormones, potent vasoconstrictors and proliferative factors involved in various cardiovascular and fibrotic diseases. Macitentan is primarily used in the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a rare and progressive disorder that affects the arteries in the lungs, causing them to become narrowed, hardened, and less able to carry blood.
