Treatment of Invasive Fungal Infections: Micafungin sodium is used for the treatment of invasive candidiasis and esophageal candidiasis caused by susceptible Candida species, including Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, and Candida parapsilosis.
Prophylaxis in High-Risk Patients: It is also indicated for the prevention of Candida infections in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) who are at high risk for invasive fungal infections.
Alternative Therapy in Fungal Resistance: In cases where patients are intolerant to or have failed traditional antifungal therapies, micafungin sodium offers an alternative treatment option.
Inhibition of Fungal Cell Wall Synthesis: Micafungin sodium acts as an echinocandin antifungal agent, inhibiting the synthesis of β-(1,3)-D-glucan, a key component of the fungal cell wall. This disruption of cell wall integrity leads to cell lysis and death of the fungus.
Broad-Spectrum Activity: It exhibits broad-spectrum activity against various Candida species, providing a therapeutic option for multiple types of fungal infections.
Favorable Safety Profile: With a relatively low potential for drug interactions and minimal effects on renal function, micafungin sodium offers a safer alternative compared to some other antifungal agents, particularly in patients with compromised renal function.
