Tranilast, chemically known as N-(3,4-dimethoxycinnamoyl)anthranilicacid, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic drug. It is primarily used in the treatment and prevention of various allergic conditions and inflammatory disorders.
Allergic Disorders: Tranilast is prescribed for the treatment of allergic rhinitis, urticaria (hives), and atopic dermatitis, where it helps to reduce inflammation and alleviate symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and skin rashes.
Prevention of Asthma: It has also been used in the prevention of bronchial asthma, particularly in patients with allergic triggers, to reduce the frequency and severity of asthma attacks.
Postsurgical Treatment: In some cases, Tranilast is administered post-surgery to prevent the formation of scar tissue and to reduce inflammation at the surgical site.
Anti-Inflammatory Action: Tranilast works by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators, such as histamine and leukotrienes, which are involved in the allergic response and inflammation.
Mast Cell Stabilization: It stabilizes mast cells, preventing them from releasing their contents (including histamine) and thereby reducing allergic reactions.
Antifibrotic Effect: By inhibiting the proliferation and migration of fibroblasts, Tranilast can help to prevent the formation of scar tissue and reduce fibrosis in various tissues.
