Heparin sodium ,used as an anticoagulant, is a mucopolysaccharide substance, is the sodium salt form of glucosamine sulfate extracted from the intestinal mucosa of pigs, cattle, and sheep. It is secreted by mast cells to be naturally presented the blood inside the human bodies.
Anticoagulation Therapy: Used extensively in medical procedures requiring blood thinning to prevent blood clots, such as during dialysis, cardiovascular surgeries, and treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
Treatment of Thromboembolic Disorders: Administered to dissolve or prevent the formation of blood clots in conditions like pulmonary embolism, myocardial infarction, and stroke.
Extracorporeal Circulation: Vital in maintaining blood flow during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and cardiopulmonary bypass procedures, ensuring blood does not clot outside the body.
Inhibits Thrombin Formation: By enhancing the activity of antithrombin III, heparin inhibits the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin, a key enzyme in the coagulation cascade responsible for blood clot formation.
Promotes Fibrinolysis: Enhances the breakdown of fibrin, the protein meshwork that stabilizes blood clots, thereby facilitating clot dissolution and reducing the risk of thrombosis.
Antiplatelet Aggregation: Though less potent than its anticoagulation effects, heparin also interferes with platelet aggregation, a process crucial for clot stabilization, further contributing to its overall anticoagulant action.
