Oxfendazole, also known as 5-phenylsulfinyl-2-benzimidazolylcarbamate methyl ester or simply fenbendazole sulfoxide, is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic belonging to the benzimidazole carbamate class of drugs.

 

1. Livestock and Poultry Deworming: Oxfendazole is widely used in veterinary medicine for the treatment and control of gastrointestinal nematodes, cestodes, and trematodes in livestock and poultry. It is effective against a wide range of parasites, including but not limited to Haemonchus, Ostertagia, Trichostrongylus, Cooperia, Nematodirus, and Oesophagostomum in sheep and cattle, as well as Ascaris in pigs.

2. Pulse Release Formulations: In certain countries, oxfendazole is formulated as pulse release pellets for use in cattle during grazing seasons. This helps to control pasture contamination and prevent parasitic gastritis and tracheitis.

3. Antiparasitic Therapy: It is also employed in the treatment of parasitic infections in companion animals, such as dogs and cats, although its use in these species may be less common compared to livestock.

1. Anthelmintic Activity: Oxfendazole exerts its antiparasitic effects by binding to β-tubulin in the parasites, thereby disrupting microtubule formation and leading to the death of the parasite. This mechanism of action is shared by other benzimidazole anthelmintics.
