Respiratory Infections: Used to treat various respiratory infections caused by susceptible bacteria, particularly in cystic fibrosis patients, where chronic lung infections are common.
Ophthalmic (Eye) Infections: Administered topically in the form of eye drops or ointments to treat bacterial conjunctivitis, keratitis, and other ocular infections.
Systemic Therapy: In severe cases or when topical treatment is insufficient, tobramycin may be administered intravenously (IV) for systemic infections involving the bloodstream, bones, or other deep tissues.
Bactericidal Activity: Tobramycin kills bacteria by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, preventing the formation of functional 70S initiation complexes, thereby halting protein synthesis and ultimately leading to bacterial cell death.
Broad-Spectrum Coverage: While not as broad as some other antibiotics, tobramycin exhibits activity against a range of Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a particularly challenging pathogen in healthcare settings.
Enhanced Efficacy in Specific Environments: Due to its ability to penetrate biofilms and mucous secretions, tobramycin is effective in treating infections in sites such as the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients, where these factors can hinder other antibiotics' access to bacterial cells.
