Description

Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat various types of bacterial infections, particularly Gram-negative infections. Tobramycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, has almost the same antibacterial spectrum as Gentamycin, but enjoys lower nephrotoxicity and otoxicity than Gentamycin. It has high antibacterial activity in Gram-negative bacteria, especially against Pseudomonas  areuginosa. Besides, it exerts synergic effect in combination with Penicillins or Cephalosporins.

Function and Application

Like all aminoglycosides, tobramycin does not pass the gastro-intestinal tract, so for systemic use it can only be given intravenously or intramuscularly. Ophthalmic (tobramycin only, Tobrex, or combined  sold as TobraDex) and nebulised formulations both have low systemic absorption.
