Dermatological Use: As an antifungal agent, it is primarily used to treat various skin infections caused by fungi, such as ringworm, athlete's foot, jock itch, and seborrheic dermatitis.
Systemic Candida Infections: In certain cases, when other antifungals are ineffective or not tolerated, ketoconazole may be prescribed orally for systemic fungal infections like candidiasis.
Dandruff Treatment: Applied topically in shampoos, it helps to alleviate symptoms of dandruff caused by fungal overgrowth on the scalp.
Antifungal Activity: It inhibits the growth of fungi by disrupting the synthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes, leading to fungal cell death.
Selective Inhibition: It exhibits a high degree of selectivity towards fungal cells, minimizing adverse effects on human cells, although some side effects can occur.
Broad-Spectrum Action: Although primarily effective against yeasts and dermatophytes, ketoconazole also demonstrates activity against some molds and dimorphic fungi, broadening its therapeutic scope.
