Captopril is used to control high blood pressure , relive symptoms of congestive heart failure , treat diabetic nephropathy and also can be used to improve survival & decrease the chances of developing symptoms of congestive heart failure. Can be used as anti- hypertension medicament.
Hypertension Treatment: Captopril is primarily used to manage hypertension (high blood pressure) by inhibiting angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), thereby reducing vasoconstriction and fluid retention.
Heart Failure Management: It is prescribed for patients with heart failure to improve symptoms such as shortness of breath and fatigue by facilitating vasodilation, reducing cardiac workload, and enhancing cardiac output.
Post-Myocardial Infarction Therapy: Captopril is also administered after a myocardial infarction (heart attack) to prevent the progression of heart failure, reduce the risk of recurrent heart attacks, and improve survival rates.
ACE Inhibition: Captopril blocks the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), a key enzyme in the renin-angiotensin system, which regulates blood pressure and fluid balance.
Vasodilation: By inhibiting ACE, captopril reduces the production of angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor. This leads to vasodilation (dilation of blood vessels), decreasing peripheral resistance and lowering blood pressure.
Aldosterone Suppression: By inhibiting ACE, captopril also decreases aldosterone secretion, a hormone that promotes sodium retention and potassium excretion. This helps in reducing fluid retention, further contributing to blood pressure control and improving heart function in heart failure patients.
