Erdosteine is a synthetic derivative of the natural amino acid, methionine, in the N-thiolactone form. As a new type of mucolytic drug, it can significantly reduce the viscosity of sputum; and significantly reduce the level of fucose (a marker of mucus glycoprotein) in sputum and the dry weight of macromolecules in sputum ; It can also significantly reduce the DNA in sputum; and increase the transport of mucociliary to enhance the expectorant effect.
