Cefuroxime, also known as cefuroxime axetil or Zinnat, is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity. It is primarily used in the treatment of bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms.
Respiratory Infections: Cefuroxime is effective in treating respiratory infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis.
Urinary Tract Infections: It is also prescribed for urinary tract infections, including cystitis and pyelonephritis, caused by susceptible bacteria.
Other Infections: Cefuroxime can be used to treat a wide range of other bacterial infections, including otitis media, sinusitis, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, and intra-abdominal and pelvic infections.
Antibacterial Activity: Cefuroxime exerts its antibacterial effect by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan, which leads to cell lysis and death. It is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including some resistant strains.
Broad Spectrum of Activity: The broad spectrum of antibacterial activity of cefuroxime makes it a versatile antibiotic for treating various types of infections.
Good Tolerability: Cefuroxime is generally well-tolerated, with relatively few side effects. However, as with all antibiotics, it should be used with caution in patients with a history of allergic reactions to cephalosporins or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
