Desogestrel (DSG) is a synthetic progestin with the chemical formula C22H30O and a molecular weight of 310.48 g/mol. It is a third-generation progestogen derived from 19-norprogesterone, designed to enhance oral bioavailability and minimize androgenic side effects. DSG is widely used in hormonal contraceptives due to its potent progestational activity and minimal estrogenic or androgenic interference.

 

1. Contraception: Acts as a progestin component in combined oral contraceptives (COCs) and progestin-only pills (POPs) to inhibit ovulation via suppression of secretion.
2. Gynecological Disorders: Administered to manage endometriosis, reduce menstrual bleeding, and prevent recurrence of endometrial polyps post-hysteroscopic polypectomy.
