Warfarin Sodium, also known as Coumadin or Marevan, is an oral anticoagulant belonging to the coumarin class of drugs. It is a racemic mixture with the chemical formula C19H15NaO4. Warfarin Sodium acts as a vitamin K antagonist, interfering with the synthesis of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors in the liver.

 

1. Long-term Anticoagulation Therapy: Warfarin Sodium is prescribed for patients requiring long-term anticoagulation therapy to prevent the formation and development of blood clots.
2. Prevention of Thromboembolic Events: It is used to prevent thromboembolic events such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation or other cardiovascular conditions.
3. Adjunctive Therapy: Warfarin Sodium may also be used as adjunctive therapy following heart valve replacement surgery or in patients with mechanical heart valves to prevent valve thrombosis.
